Welcome!

Hi! I’m so happy you’re here. I juggle the roles of mother, writer, and photographer nestled on my homestead; wearing the hats of beekeeper, homeschooler, and caretaker of a myriad of creatures, both human and beast. As a beekeeper, I find inspiration in hives, honey, and the space where the intertwining of the ordinary and extraordinary in Creation meet.

Here at The Local Wild, I’m on a mission to make utilizing the power of raw honey and herbs easy and accessible, while preserving the ancient tradition of the Electuary—all while keeping bees! Each blend is inspired by the needs of individuals and families, as well as the changing seasons, making this a versatile and powerful form of herbal medicine. I sincerely hope that these electuaries become a facet of your wellness and part of your story—where all things come together to create a whole. There is wonder and beauty here beneath the sun, a small glimpse of One far greater!

What is an Electuary?

"Electuary" is an old word for a blend of powdered herbs and honey (or sometimes maple syrup). It's a shelf-stable way to keep herbs ready to consume rather than having to do an infusion or decoction. An electuary can be taken by the spoonful or blended into your favorite hot beverage, adding sweetness and the wonderful healing properties of the herbs used.

In addition to offering an easier way to consume herbal medicine, it also makes them so incredibly delicious! Which means one is more likely to be consistent with their herbs.

Electuaries have a rich history in traditional medicine dating back to ancient times when they were used in ancient Greece and Rome by physicians such as Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen to make medicinal substances more palatable. In the Middle Ages, there's evidence to suggest Hildegard of Bingen and Avicenna recommended the use of electuaries, which would often be prepared by an apothecary using honey or another sweetener to mask the flavor of the herbs, spices, or other less palatable medicines as well as to help preserve the active ingredients.

Pharmacopoeias from the Renaissance include recipes for electuaries addressing issues ranging from digestive complaints to respiratory ailments. There are even classical formulas from traditional Chinese Medicine texts that utilize electuaries.

How can you use an Electuary?

Take Raw: Take a teaspoon straight from the jar! This is the most potent way to enjoy the benefits of raw honey and herbs.

Stir into Warm Water or Tea: Mix a spoonful into a cup of warm (not boiling) water, favorite warm beverage or warm milk.

Pair with Food: Spread it on toast, use it in dressings, drizzle over oatmeal, or add to smoothies for an easy wellness boost!

For When It’s Slightly Separated: If you notice some separation between honey and herbs, simply give it a good stir before using.Separation is natural in raw honey blends, so simply stir and enjoy!

Storage: An electuary typically ranges between 6 to 12 months if kept in ideal conditions. However, because raw honey itself is a natural preservative, electuaries can last even longer if stored properly.

Best Practice: For herbs to be most effective, consistency is key! Taken regularly, herbs gently work to support and harmonize with your body’s natural systems—helping to nourish, restore, and maintain balance over time. Because of their cumulative effect, daily use is ideal. If you’re looking for a steady supply, I offers subscriptions to keep your home apothecary stocked and fresh.

I sincerely hope you enjoy our honey, stories and we are proud to be a small part of your family and home!
